Saturday Night

Funny night. I think I went to the maddest party EVER. A friend of a friend (who incidently wasn't even there) invited us to an old fire station where we found about 300 random people dancing to arguably the most eclectic DJ set of all time. How's this for a snippet of his set list:

Groove Armada - FreeStylin'
Kylie - Can't Get You Out of My Head
Beastie Boys - Intergalactic
John Farnham - Take the Pressure Down
Bryan Adams - Summer of '69

I'm glad I was sober and straight - there were a lot of very, very confused people wandering around.

Tee hee...

You'll never walk alone...

Massive win by Liverpool today in the Champions League. Called a mate up who was partying in Trafalgar Square with a mass of London based Kop. It took me back to the England v Turkey celebrations in the last Euro Cup qualifiers.

East Timor versus Burma

When we were travelling, I noticed that there was a considerable amount of positive international sentiment for Australia's involvement in East Timor. Australia restored order in the region after a guerilla offensive reportedly backed by the Indonesian military. Hoorah for Australia, boo to Indonesia. Unfortunately, it seems that this military action draws considerable parallels with the original Gulf War.

East Timor, like Kuwait, has considerable oil and gas reserves that both Indonesia and Australia were quite interested in. A cynic could therefore suggest that Australia only saved the East Timorese because of its economic interest in the region. If Australia is truly the World Police's Asian representative, why haven't we intervened in Burma.

My parents and brothers have all visited the Karen refugee camp on the Myanmar (Burma) / Thailand border and returned with sad stories of their treatment. The Burmese State Development and "Peace" Council have committed genocidal attrocities against the Karen over a long period of time whilst Thailand (perhaps due to telecommunications interests in the area) and Australia (due to a lack of economic interest) sit on their hands.

One only hopes that Australia's "human rights driven" devotion to the East Timorese will eventually be replicated in this situation, or that one of the refugees stumbles upon a resource supply of international significance in the near future.

Goon Juice

From Niss this morning:

"I keep doing sick burps. Have decided having goon at home is not actually as good an idea as we first thought. Money 'saved' by buying inferior wine is in fact spent the following day on energy drinks and sausage rolls."

Phishing

Feeling a bit better today.

Just had an interesting thought. From now on, whenever I get a phishing email, I'm going to access the site and put in some phony details. If those pr*cks are going to waste my time with spam and general nastiness, it's only fair that I waste a bit of their time as well.

Feeling a bit fragile and grubby today. This weekend has made me feel like a rudderless ship. I love my girl and my family but I feel a little lost otherwise. Niss and I got back from London a few months ago and things have been flying. New jobs, a wedding to organise, friends to catch up with and a life to re-create. Only thing is, I'm not sure that I'm the same person I was when I left and I don't know where I fit in with the friends I had - kind of feeling like the novelty has worn off a bit.

Maybe travelling again would help. Maybe it would just prolong the inevitable. Maybe we just need to grow up.

Maybe I'm just coming down from friday night...

Hello!

Hi,

Welcome to my blog. This comment is as much for myself as it is for any prospective readers. I've started this for two reasons: one, to try and get a bit of a feel for the phenomenon that is blogging; and two, to start immersing myself a little bit more in the industry (IT) that I have found myself a member of. 'tis a little bit hard to be an IT professional when you take as little interest in it as I do!

I've named this blog Black and White because I figure it's a fairly apt description of the way I go about life. It's not something that I'm overtly enamoured with, but I have a tendency to see one side of a situation, often overlooking grey areas. I suppose, with time, that I'll iron this trait out of my personality - but I often wonder whether in doing so I'd be taking away something that sets me apart from others.

Self assessment aside, I enjoy a party, most sports (particularly basketball and Aussie Rules) and a good argument. I treasure my friends and my beautiful fiancee. I enjoy most music - particularly rock and electronica, but will listen to just about anything except R & B. I love ranting about politics but am way too uninformed to make an intelligent point - that said, it hasn't stopped me yet.

Hope you enjoy this blog - it will be interesting to see how I go at keeping it up to date!!!

Cheers,

Andrew
